The Art Studio Buzz – from Mrs. Smith

Hello everyone!

The art studio has been busy with many exciting projects across all grade levels.

Kindergarten recently learned about artists Alma Woodsey Thomas and Yayoi Kusama. Inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s signature dotted style, Kindergarten students are creating dotted rocks, which will be displayed in our Meredith Garden.

First grade is finishing up their Quilts of Gee’s Bend paint chip collages.

Second grade is creating greeting cards that will be displayed at WallFlower, a paper and party shop on 4th Street.

Third grade is also completing their Gee’s Bend collages. The first and third grade projects will be assembled into a quilt-style format.

Fourth grade will begin a more in-depth study of the Quilts of Gee’s Bend. Students will select a quilt design to study and create their own interpretation.

Fifth through seventh grade students are working on their Snapshots of Childhood Joy paint chip mosaics. These pieces will be scanned, printed on weatherproof material, and displayed on the school’s exterior windows.

Eighth grade students are creating tree sculptures, and they are coming along beautifully.

In addition, I recently installed a Lunar New Year lantern display on all three floors of the school, with a large banner hanging on the first floor. The entire school contributed to these Lunar New Year installations.

Thank you for supporting the creativity happening in the art studio!

Warmly,
Mrs. Sonya Smith
Visual Arts Teacher at Meredith
